bearing

A supported pivot that lets a shaft, roller or wheel turn smoothly; worn bearings are a common noise source.

What it means

Bearings carry rotating parts. There are bearings in the motor, the gearbox, the sheave, the door operator and the roller guides. A healthy bearing is nearly silent. A worn one rumbles, whines or grinds, and the noise usually rises and falls with speed, which is how an engineer tells it apart from a rubbing fault.

Throughout the drive system and in any rolling assembly.

How it works

Wear develops slowly and then accelerates. Early noise gives weeks or months of warning; heat, vibration and play follow. Catching it early usually means replacing a bearing rather than a whole assembly.

Because bearings are inside machinery, diagnosis relies on where and when the noise happens. That is why the owner's description matters.

Why it matters

Bearing noise is one of the clearest examples of maintenance paying for itself: a reported rumble is a planned part swap, while an ignored one is an unplanned breakdown.

Commonly confused with

A bearing is often blamed for any noise from the machine room, but a bearing is only the part that lets a shaft or wheel turn. Rope slap, a dry guide rail and a loose fixing all make noise too, and all sound different. A bearing noise follows the speed of the moving part and rises and falls with it.

Wear, service and lifespan

Bearings wear slowly. Sealed bearings run for years and then fail over a few weeks; greased bearings depend on the grease being renewed at service. An engineer listens to each bearing, checks for play and heat, and re-greases what is designed to be re-greased. A bearing that has started to whine is normally replaced at a planned visit rather than left to seize.

Signs to watch for

  • A rumble or whine that rises with speed.
  • Noise from the machine area rather than the doors.
  • New vibration felt in the car floor.
  • Grinding that gets worse over weeks.
  • Noise present in both directions of travel.

Troubleshooting bearing

  • A steady whine or growl that speeds up as the lift speeds up

    What it usually means: A bearing in the drive or a roller is losing its grease film

    Safe check: Listen from the landing on two or three trips and note whether the noise happens going up, going down, or both.

  • A rhythmic knock once per turn of a wheel

    What it usually means: A flat spot or damaged track inside one bearing

    Safe check: Count roughly how many knocks a second and whether they stop the moment the car stops.

  • A burnt or hot smell near the machine space after several trips

    What it usually means: Something is running hot, which can be a seizing bearing

    Safe check: Take the lift out of use and report it the same day. Do not open the machine space yourself.

How to report it

Say where you hear it from, whether it happens up, down or both, and whether it changes with the number of people in the car. Say whether the noise is new this week or has grown over months. That tells the engineer whether to bring a bearing kit to the first visit.
