guide shoes

The sliding or rolling parts at the corners of a car frame that hold the car steady against the guide rails.

What it means

Guide shoes keep the car aligned. They sit at the four corners of the car frame and run against the steel guide rails fixed down the shaft. Some are simple sliding shoes with a plastic liner, others are rollers on sprung arms. Either way they take the sideways forces, so passengers feel a straight ride rather than a swaying one.

Where you see it

Top and bottom of the car frame and, on traction lifts, on the counterweight frame too. They are inside the shaft, so an owner only ever hears them.

How it works

Sliding shoes wear a little every journey and are usually lubricated from a small reservoir. Roller guides run dry and rely on their bearings. In both cases the wear is even until something changes — a rail joint that has moved, a shoe liner that has broken up, or a lubricator that has run empty.

As clearance grows, the car begins to move sideways slightly before the shoes catch it. That shows up as a knock at the same point on every journey, because rail joints are at fixed heights.

Why it matters

Ride quality is the most useful early-warning system a lift has. A ride that gets rougher over a few months, or a knock that appears between two particular floors, is worth reporting long before anything actually fails.

Commonly confused with

Guide shoes are often blamed for every rough ride, but rough ride can equally come from rail joints, building movement or worn roller tyres. Sliding shoes and roller guides are also different parts with different noises: sliding shoes hiss and squeal, rollers thump at joints.

Wear, service and lifespan

Sliding shoe liners are consumable and are replaced when the ride roughens; roller guides last longer but the tyres flat-spot if a lift stands unused for months. Service work checks the rail lubrication that the shoes depend on, and dry rails are one of the most common causes of a squeal on every trip.

Signs to watch for

  • A regular knock or bump at the same points in the shaft.
  • The car sways noticeably at speed.
  • The ride is smooth in one direction and rough in the other.
  • A squeal or rubbing sound that changes with speed.
  • Ride quality has changed since the last service.

Troubleshooting guide shoes

  • A squeal or rubbing noise through the whole travel

    What it usually means: Dry rails or worn shoe liners

    Safe check: Ride once and note whether the noise is continuous or only at certain floors.

  • A regular bump every few seconds while travelling

    What it usually means: Rail joints being felt through worn guides

    Safe check: Count the bumps between two floors and report the number.

  • The car sways noticeably when people move inside it

    What it usually means: Excess clearance at the guides

    Safe check: Note whether it happens empty, loaded, or only when someone walks across the car.

How to report it

Describe the ride, not the part: continuous squeal, regular bump, or sway. Say whether it is worse near the top, the bottom or throughout. That lets the engineer decide between rail work, lubrication and shoe replacement before the visit.
