hydraulic lift

A lift pushed up by oil pumped into a ram and lowered by letting that oil flow back to the tank under control.

What it means

A hydraulic lift has no counterweight. A pump pushes oil into a cylinder, the ram extends, and the car goes up. To come down, a valve opens and the weight of the car pushes the oil back to the tank at a controlled rate. Because the motor only works on the way up, hydraulic lifts are quiet on the way down and simple to lower by hand in an emergency.

Where you see it

Low-rise buildings, platform lifts and many home lifts use hydraulics. The power unit — tank, pump and valve block — usually sits in a small cupboard near the bottom landing rather than in a machine room at the top.

How it works

The valve block does most of the clever work. It ramps the flow up gently at the start, holds a steady speed, then closes gradually so the car settles rather than stops dead. Levelling at the top floor is done by adding a little more oil; at the bottom, by letting a little out.

Oil temperature matters more than people expect. Cold oil is thick, so an early-morning journey can be slower and can stop short of the floor until the system warms. Hot oil is thin, which is why a lift worked hard for an hour may start creeping down from a landing while it waits.

Why it matters

Hydraulic faults tend to be gradual. A seal that has started to pass oil makes the car settle slowly at the top floor; a filter that is clogging makes the journey up steadily slower. Both are easy to spot early because they change the lift's behaviour before they stop it.

Commonly confused with

Hydraulic and traction lifts are frequently mixed up by users because both simply go up and down. A hydraulic lift usually has a tank and pump in a cupboard near the bottom of the shaft rather than a machine room at the top, and it commonly travels slower up than down. Oil temperature affects how it behaves.

Wear, service and lifespan

The oil, the seals and the valve block are the wear items. Oil that is dirty, low, or too hot changes levelling and speed, and small seal weeps are normal to monitor but not to ignore. Service visits check oil level and temperature, the pressure relief, the emergency lowering and the ram seal condition.

Signs to watch for

  • The car sinks slowly away from the top landing while the doors are open.
  • The first journey of the day is slow or stops short.
  • The pump runs longer than it used to for the same travel.
  • There is an oily smell, or a stain on the floor near the power unit cupboard.
  • The lift goes up unevenly but comes down normally.

Troubleshooting hydraulic lift

  • The car sinks slightly after stopping and relevels

    What it usually means: Normal on some hydraulics, but frequent relevelling suggests a valve or seal leak

    Safe check: Count how many times it relevels while you stand at one floor.

  • It is slow going up in the morning and fine later

    What it usually means: Cold oil, which thickens overnight

    Safe check: Compare the first trip of the day with one in the afternoon.

  • An oil smell or a damp patch near the shaft door

    What it usually means: A leak from the ram, pipework or tank

    Safe check: Report it immediately and keep the area clear. Do not enter the pit or open cupboards.

How to report it

Say whether the problem is up, down, or at the stop, and whether it changes through the day. Temperature-linked symptoms point at oil; symptoms that never change point at valves or electrics. Report any visible oil straight away as a safety matter.
