lift

A powered machine that carries people or goods between fixed levels of a building, guided by rails and controlled from landings and from inside the car.

What it means

A lift is a powered platform or cabin that moves people or goods between the floors of a building. It runs on fixed guides, so it can only travel the path it was installed on. A drive raises and lowers it, a controller decides when it moves, and a set of safety devices stops it if anything is out of place. In British English the machine is a lift; American English calls the same machine an elevator, and both words describe the same equipment.

Where you see it

Lifts appear in houses, blocks of flats, offices, shops, care homes, schools and factories. In a home the lift is usually a small self-contained unit that serves two floors. In a workplace it is usually a larger machine in a built shaft, with landing doors at each level and a service record that a duty holder has to keep. Whatever the size, the same three parts are present: something that drives it, something that guides it, and something that stops it safely.

How it works

Pressing a call button tells the controller which floor wants the lift. The controller checks that every door is shut and locked and that no safety circuit is open. Only then does it energise the drive. The car accelerates, travels along its guides, slows as it approaches the target floor and levels with the landing before the doors are released.

On the way, sensors report where the car is. Some lifts count pulses from the motor, others read magnets or tape in the shaft. If the reported position stops making sense, or a door signal drops out mid-travel, the controller cuts the drive and holds the car still. That is why a lift that stops for no obvious reason is usually a lift that has protected itself rather than one that has broken.

Why it matters

For an owner the useful mental model is a chain: power, controller, drive, guides, doors, safety circuit. A fault anywhere in the chain shows up as the same symptom — the lift will not move. Knowing the chain makes the difference between a vague call and a useful one, because the answers to a few simple questions tell an engineer which link to look at first.

Commonly confused with

The word covers a lot of very different machines: passenger lifts, goods lifts, platform lifts, home lifts and stairlifts. They fall under different rules, have different response times and different service regimes. Saying which type you have is the first thing that gets a call routed correctly.

Wear, service and lifespan

Any lift is a system of parts that wear at different rates: doors fastest, drive and ropes slower, structure slowest of all. Planned maintenance, a written thorough examination regime and a record of faults are what keep the system safe and its downtime predictable. Modernisation becomes the conversation when spares stop being available.

Signs to watch for

  • The lift does not respond to a landing call, or responds and then stops.
  • It moves in one direction only, or only between some floors.
  • It stops slightly above or below the landing.
  • It runs noisier or rougher than it did a few months ago.
  • A fault message, code or beeping pattern appears that was not there before.

Troubleshooting lift

  • The lift stops responding to calls at every floor

    What it usually means: A latched fault, a tripped supply or an isolating switch

    Safe check: Look at any display for a code, note whether the car light is on, and report both.

  • It works but feels or sounds different from last week

    What it usually means: Early wear that has not yet caused a stop

    Safe check: Describe the change and when it started; small changes reported early prevent shutdowns.

  • The car stops slightly off floor level

    What it usually means: Levelling drift, a trip hazard that gets worse

    Safe check: Measure roughly how far off, at which floors, loaded and empty.

How to report it

Give the lift type, the building, the lift number, what happened, when, and whether anyone was inside. Those five facts decide the priority and what the engineer brings. Never force doors, move a stuck car, remove panels or enter the pit or shaft.
