What it means

A platform lift carries a wheelchair, a pushchair or a standing passenger over a short height. It travels slowly and, on many models, only while a button is held down. Short-rise units may be open, with a low guard, while taller ones are enclosed with a shaft and doors. They are the usual answer where a ramp would be too long and a full passenger lift too big or too expensive.

Where you see it

You find them at the entrance to shops, surgeries, village halls, listed buildings and split-level houses. They are also common inside offices where a mezzanine or a raised platform has to be reachable. Because they are so often at the front door of a public building, a platform lift that stops working shuts out exactly the people it was installed for.

Why it matters

Outdoor platform lifts collect leaves, grit and water. Most of the faults reported on them are environmental rather than electrical: a sensor that thinks something is under the platform, a gate that no longer closes squarely after a knock, or a drain that has filled up. Regular cleaning of the platform edges prevents a surprising share of the callouts.

Commonly confused with

Platform lifts are confused with passenger lifts and with wheelchair stairlifts. A vertical platform lift rises through a short height, often within a low-rise shaft or a self-supporting structure, and normally travels only while a control is held. It is not a slow passenger lift; it is a different class of machine.

Wear, service and lifespan

Controls, gates, safety edges and the drive are the wear items. Service work tests every edge and gate interlock, the emergency lowering, the alarm and the hold-to-run controls. Outdoor platform lifts also need drainage and corrosion checks, because standing water is the main cause of winter failures.

Signs to watch for

• The platform moves down but not up, or stops as soon as the button is released.
• A gate or door will not release at the top landing.
• The unit hums but does not travel.
• Travel is jerky, or noticeably slower than usual.
• The safety pan under the platform triggers when nothing is there.

  What it usually means: Water ingress into controls or a tripped supply

  Safe check: Check for a tripped breaker and report standing water around the base.

How to report it

Say whether the control is hold-to-run, which level it fails at, and whether the user was on board. If the lift is someone's only accessible route into or through the building, say so, because that raises the priority.
