How to use these stairlift guides
Stairlifts are the most user-serviceable equipment covered on this site, and also the most commonly misdiagnosed.
A large share of reported faults come down to power, charging contacts, a seat or footrest that is not fully in position, or an obstruction on the rail.
All of which present as a lift that beeps, flashes or simply refuses to move. Exactly like a serious control fault would.
Work through the guide that matches the behaviour: the diagnostic display code, the sound pattern, and where on the rail the lift stops are the three details that separate a trivial cause from an engineer visit.
Curved-rail fittings add their own failure modes around the bends and at charge points. So note precisely where the carriage was when it stopped.
Charging, batteries and intermittent faults
Most domestic stairlifts run from batteries that recharge at fixed points on the rail. This is why a lift left parked away from a charge point will often work once and then die.
Batteries also age: a stairlift that completes one journey but fails partway through the second is showing a classic end-of-life battery pattern rather than a drive fault. Replacing the drive would fix nothing.
Intermittent behaviour is worth documenting before you call anybody. Note the time of day, whether the lift had been charging. This direction it was travelling, how far it got.
What the display or beeper did. An engineer arriving to a lift that currently works can only act on that record.

Anything beyond that — covers off, motor housing, brake, safety edges — belongs to a trained engineer.
If a user is stranded on the stairlift mid-flight, stay with them, keep the staircase clear, and call the service provider.
Do not try to move the carriage by hand unless the manufacturer's own manual release procedure has been demonstrated to you by an engineer for that specific model.
Describing a fault so the first visit counts
The single biggest cause of a wasted engineer visit is a vague report.
"The lift is broken" tells a service desk nothing about which engineer to send, which parts to load, or how urgent the attendance is.
The result is a diagnostic visit followed by a second visit with the right component. A specific report often collapses those two visits into one.
Every detail it needs can be gathered from the landing in about two minutes.
Start with the equipment: lift type, manufacturer, model and any unit or job number printed on the plate or the notice at the landing, plus roughly how old the fitting is.
Then describe the behaviour in the present tense — where the car is. Whether it is level with a floor, whether the doors are open, closed or held part-open.
What any display or indicator is showing, whether the call buttons illuminate. What sound the lift makes when a call is placed. Finish with history: when it started.
Whether it is constant or intermittent, whether it is worse in one direction or at one floor, and anything that changed beforehand such as a power cut.
Water ingress, building works or a recent visit.
Say plainly whether anyone is inside, whether the lift has been taken out of service, and who holds the maintenance contract.
If a group of lifts shares a controller, say how many cars are affected. Those three lines change the priority, the paperwork and often the engineer assigned.
They are usually left out of the first call.
Maintenance, examination and the difference between them
Two separate activities keep a lift in service. Confusing them is the most expensive mistake an owner can make.
Maintenance is the planned upkeep done under a service contract: adjustment, lubrication, cleaning, replacement of wearing parts and attention to the small faults that would otherwise become callouts.
Thorough examination is an independent assessment of whether the equipment is currently safe to use, done by a competent person at a legal interval and producing a written report that identifies defects and the timescale for putting them right.
A maintenance visit does not discharge the examination duty. An examination is not a repair. The competent person reports, they do not fix.
Where a lift carries people at work, both are needed. The examination should be sufficiently independent of the firm doing the maintenance for the opinion to be objective.
Insurers often insist on that separation even where a duty holder would not have chosen it.
Keep both records with the fault history and any repair invoices.
Beyond compliance, that file is what turns a repair-or-replace conversation into an evidence-based decision: escalating callout frequency, repeat faults on the same component and lengthening parts lead times are all visible in the record long before a contractor raises them, and a duty holder who can produce it is in a far stronger position when a large quote arrives.
Costs, quotes and parts availability
Lift work is priced in a way that surprises owners who have only dealt with domestic trades. A callout charge usually covers attendance and first diagnosis rather than any repair.
Parts are quoted separately and often carry lead times measured in weeks for older or discontinued equipment; and out-of-hours attendance is charged at a different rate that should be stated in the contract rather than discovered on an invoice.
None of that is unreasonable, but all of it should be in writing before work starts.
When comparing quotes, compare like for like. Ask each firm what the price includes. Whether it covers a return visit if the diagnosis changes.
Whether parts are new, reconditioned or out of date-equivalent, what warranty applies to the labour and the parts. How the work affects any existing maintenance contract.
Marketing copy is not similar; identical answers to identical questions are.
Treat any recommendation to replace an entire fitting without inspecting it as a prompt for a second opinion, and be wary of pressure to decide on the phone.
Upgrade work is sometimes really the right answer on an ageing lift with unavailable parts. It is a decision that should follow evidence from the maintenance record rather than a single conversation.
The vocabulary that appears in reports and quotes
Most friction between lift owners and service companies is vocabulary rather than disagreement. A landing door is the door in the wall at each floor.
A car door is the one that travels with the lift, and on most fittings the landing door is opened by the car door through a mechanical coupling — which is why a fault at one floor can look like a fault everywhere.
An interlock is the device that proves a door is both closed and locked before the lift is allowed to move.
It is the component behind a very large share of "the lift will not start" reports.
On the drive side, the machine is the motor and gearing that turns the sheave. The brake holds the car when the machine is not driving.
The governor is an independent overspeed device that has nothing to do with normal stopping; and the safety gear is the mechanism that grips the guide rails if the governor trips.
Buffers at the bottom of the shaft are a last-resort energy absorber, not part of normal operation.
The controller is the cabinet of logic that decides which calls to answer and takes the lift out of service when it detects something it does not like — which is why a controller fault and a drive fault are different quotes.
Words used about faults matter just as much. A callout is attendance at an unplanned failure. A repair is the work that follows.
The two are often billed separately. An entrapment is a passenger inside a stopped car and is handled by a release, not by a repair visit.
Levelling describes the car stopping fractionally above or below the floor. This is a trip hazard and a reportable fault rather than a cosmetic annoyance.
Out of service means the controller has withdrawn the lift from normal operation itself. Is a different statement from a lift that has simply been switched off or isolated by the building.
On the paperwork side, maintenance is planned upkeep under a contract.
A thorough examination is an independent safety assessment by a competent person under LOLER; a written scheme of examination sets intervals where the legal default is not appropriate; and upgrade work means replacing major subsystems.
Usually the controller, drive and doors — rather than the whole fitting. Knowing which of those words a quote is using stops you paying for one thing while believing you have bought another.
