Lift Shaft Hoists

Lift shaft hoists are the lifting devices used inside a lift well rather than the lift itself. Engineers rig them to raise ropes, guide rails. Counterweight blocks and motors during fitting, upgrade work and major repair. They are short-term equipment doing permanent-looking work. This is why they carry their own safety rules. This guide explains the main types, where they are used. What a building manager should expect to see.

What Lift Shaft Hoists Are

A lift shaft hoist is a lifting device rigged inside the lift well to move heavy parts up and down during work on the fitting.

Most are chain blocks, lever hoists or small electric hoists hung from a beam, a bracket or a purpose-made anchor at the top of the shaft.

They lift components, tools and materials — never people.

The confusion with the lift itself is common, and worth clearing up. The passenger or goods lift is a permanent machine governed by the Lifts Rules and the maintenance regime that follows.

A shaft hoist is short-term work equipment brought in, rigged, used and removed. Different rules, different paperwork, different people allowed near it.

What it involves

You will also hear the phrase used loosely for the permanent lifting machine at the head of a well, especially on older traction fittings. Ask which one someone means before agreeing to anything.

If a quote mentions a hoist and a shaft in the same line, get the exact component named.

Where Lift Shaft Hoists Are Used

New fittings use them from the first day. Guide rails arrive in lengths and have to be raised, aligned and bolted floor by floor.

Counterweight fillers, car frames and door assemblies all travel up the same way.

Upgrade work is the other big use. Replacing a machine, a controller or a set of ropes means getting heavy parts into a well that already has a lift in it.

Who to ask and what to expect

Repairs bring smaller versions of the same job. A rope change, a governor replacement or a buffer swap may need only a lever hoist and a short rigging plan.

Even then the anchor point has to be proven. The load has to be known. The shaft has to be closed to everyone else while the work is live.

Types and Components

Manual chain blocks are the workhorse. They are simple, hold their load without power. Give fine control when aligning a rail.

Lever hoists do a similar job in tight spaces where a hand chain will not hang cleanly. Electric hoists appear on larger commercial jobs where many heavy lifts are planned and speed matters.

The anchor is the part that decides whether the arrangement is safe. Some buildings have a permanent lifting eye or beam designed into the shaft head with a marked capacity.

What it involves

Others need a short-term beam or bracket designed for the job. A hook over a convenient steel is not an anchor, and an unmarked eye of unknown age is not a capacity.

Slings, shackles, hooks and chains are lifting parts in their own right. Each needs its own identification, its own marked working load and its own examination record.

Who to ask and what to expect

On a well-run job the engineer can produce that paperwork for every item in the shaft when asked.

Guide rails, brackets and the shaft structure itself are part of the picture too. A hoist is only as safe as what it hangs from and what it lifts against.

What to check and report

So engineers check bracket fixings and rail alignment as they work up the well. Poor fixings show up later as a rough ride in the finished lift.

This is why alignment is measured floor by floor rather than at the end.

Lighting and communication complete the set-up.

A shaft with a short-term lighting string, a working intercom to the landing and a clear hand-signal arrangement is a shaft where the person on the hoist and the person at the landing can agree when a load is moving.

That co-ordination, rather than the hoist itself, is what keeps the lift safe.

Safety and Shaft Access

Lift wells are among the highest-risk spaces in any building. There is a fall risk, a crush risk between the car and the structure, live electrical equipment and often poor light.

Only trained lift engineers with the right isolation and rescue plans should be in there. Building staff, contractors from other trades and curious owners should never enter a shaft or a pit.

That rule holds even when the work looks finished. A hoist left rigged, a landing door propped, a barrier moved to one side. All of these mean the job is still live.

If you find a shaft open and unattended, keep people away from it and call the lift contractor. Do not close doors, move equipment or try to make it safe yourself.

Expect to see a permit or method statement for shaft work, a plan naming who is in the well and who is watching the landings, and physical protection at every open landing door.

Inspection and Records for Shaft Hoists

Short-term equipment is still lifting equipment. A shaft hoist and every accessory used with it must be examined at the legal intervals and after any exceptional event.

On short jobs the contractor brings equipment with current reports and takes it away again.

What it involves

On long upgrade work the same hoist may sit in the shaft for months and fall due while it is there.

Ask for the reports at the start, not at the end. A one-line entry in the site file naming each hoist, its capacity.

What to check and report

Anchor points deserve a separate note in the record. If a short-term beam was installed for the job, note who designed it. What it is rated for and when it was removed.

If a permanent eye in the shaft head was used, note its marked capacity and the date it was last examined.

These are the details that get lost between contracts and cause arguments on the next project.

What Building Managers Should Do

Before work starts, ask three things. What is going into the shaft, what is it hanging from, and who is allowed in the well?

Then ask for the examination reports for the hoist and its parts. A competent lift contractor will have all of this ready and will not mind being asked.

What it involves

During the work, keep residents and staff informed and keep landings protected. Post clear notices at every affected floor, name a contact. Give a realistic date for the lift coming back into service.

Most complaints about shaft work are about surprise, not about noise.

Afterwards, close the loop. Confirm the hoist and any short-term anchor have been removed or left safe and recorded.

Get the start-up testing or return-to-service paperwork for the lift, and diary the next thorough examination.

If something about a lift feels wrong after work in the shaft — a new noise, doors that hesitate. A floor that is not level with the landing.

What to check and report

Record what you noticed and report it to the lift contractor. Check and report only. Do not force doors, do not try to move a stuck car.

Do not remove panels to look inside.

Planning Shaft Lifting Work

Good shaft work is planned before anyone opens a landing door. The contractor should produce a lifting plan naming each heavy component, its weight. The hoist that will raise it.

The anchor it hangs from and the order the lifts happen in. Rails first, then the car frame. Then the machine and controller is the usual sequence.

Because each stage depends on the last being aligned and bolted.

What it involves

The plan should also say how the shaft is isolated. On an upgrade work the existing lift is switched off at the controller, locked off.

The car is parked and secured so it cannot move. On a new fitting there is no car yet. So the risk shifts to open landings and falling objects.

Both cases need physical obstacles, not tape, and signed notices at every floor.

Weights are the detail worth checking. A set of guide rails for a five-storey shaft, a counterweight filled with steel blocks or a traction machine can each run into hundreds of kilograms.

If the marked capacity of the anchor is lower than the heaviest planned lift, the plan is wrong and the job should not start until a suitable beam is designed for it.

Costs and timescales

Timing matters in occupied buildings. In a housing blocks with one lift. Weeks of shaft work means weeks of stairs for everyone.

Ask for a phased programme, agreed working hours, and a short-term arrangement for residents who cannot use stairs. Where a building has two lifts.

Insist that only one is taken out of service at a time.
